08040 Writing Workshop for Scholastic Art & Writing Awards (Age 13+)

This course will guide students through the process of writing an essay for the "Flash Fiction" (1,000 words) category of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Instruction will include analysis of sample winning essays, step-by-step guidance and skill building in the stages of writing (brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, and editing), and individualized feedback on students' developing essays. Students will also learn to employ a range of literary devices (important for literary analysis in high school and college) and be guided to apply grammar and punctuation principles as needed. (Contest submission requires students to be 13+ years old by the December 5 deadline, in grades 7 through 12, and "residing in the United States, U.S. territories or military bases, or Canada." $10 entry fee via Stripe; fee waiver based on need.)
